The 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL is one of the most anticipated sports cars this decade. As a high-performance AMG sports car with all the luxury features of the SL series, this car has quite a few competitors in its class.
So far, only Porsche 911, Jaguar F-Type, Aston Martin Vantage, and BMW 8-Series have become its biggest competitors. However, expert reviews continue to rank the SL series on top of the competition, with only the same automaker’s AMG GT model being the closest contender.
There is virtually nothing better for buyers looking for a perfect combination of luxury and sporty ride than a new Mercedes-Benz SL roadster.
2022 Mercedes-Benz SL Reborn
Mercedes-Benz SL’s standing as a luxury sports car icon is indisputable; however, it is widely known that its market performance has been rather poor within the previous years.
The series’ downfall can be traced back to 2012, when the R231 model was released, with the SL 63 variant ultimately canceled in 2019 due to its poor sales. Despite featuring a significantly lighter all-aluminum body, the R231 was notoriously known for its mediocre interior, which barely matched its exterior’s luxury look.
A mid-cycle facelift was undertaken in 2017 to correct this problem. Although this facelift introduced many exterior changes, such as a revised front grille and larger cosmetic side vents, it failed to significantly improve the car’s interior design. Ultimately, a full-upgrade instead of a facelift is the only answer to bring the SL model back to the surface.
Looking at the 3D Rendering
Last week, information about the 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL, especially regarding its physical look and design details, is available only from the spy shots of the camouflaged prototype.
However, early this week, the 3D rendering of the car surfaces on the internet. The 3D rendering first appeared on Kolesa, a Russian automotive website.
Although it shows some new elements expected to be introduced in the real model, whose release is yet to be confirmed, the body design doesn’t look very exciting overall. So, expect little change in the model’s design compared with the restyled R231.
Looking at the 3D rendering, you can notice a slight change in the body’s front part. The hood part appears shorter than the current model, and the wheels get closer to the front doors, which causes the front overhang to extend longer. The 3D rendering also shows the swapping of a solid roof with a fabric one.
The car’s fascia will likely adopt the company’s new design philosophy, with the headlights getting narrower, the front license plate frame being understated, and the door handles being retractable. Some of these elements are already introduced in the S-Class model and will likely be present in the 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL.
Neither the spy shots nor the 3D rendering gives definite clues regarding the car’s interior; however, by looking at how the cabin is shifted forward in the exterior view, we can assume the possibility of seating formation change. The SL models have always been two-seater; however, the new model will likely be a four-seater. Other than this detail, there is nothing more to say regarding the car’s interior.
Mercedes-Benz has always found a quick solution from its AMG subdivision whenever a balance between cost and performance is desired. We can optimistically expect that the future 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL will also be an AMG sports car with AMG’s powerful powerhouse under its hood.
Some details can be predicted based on this assumption. Firstly, the car will likely be a rear-wheel-drive sports car with a powerful bi-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine under the hood. A hybrid variant is expected to be available as well. The massive power should be efficiently transmitted to the wheels by the car’s SL 73e 4MATIC transmission.
All these predictions are based on Mercedes-Benz’s current development trends with AMG and are subject to change.
2022 Mercedes-Benz SL Release Date & Price
Despite all the spy shots, 3D rendering, and predictions, there is no clear information regarding the release of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL. There is no confirmation whether it will be released soon, especially because Mercedes-Benz is already focusing on the GT model, which began in 2016. When it Released, the price must be starting at$100,000.
